Matthew J. Piers
Matthew J. Piers is a shareholder in and the president of the law firm Hughes Socol Piers Resnick & Dym, Ltd. (“HSPRD”). Matt has a nationwide practice, concentrated in complex litigation. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1974, and has been engaged in litigation since that time.
Matt joined HSPRD in 1989, returning to private practice at that time after spending five years as the head of litigation for the City of Chicago, where he was the overall supervisor of all lawsuits involving the City. In addition to representing whistleblowers in federal and state claims, Matt’s broad practice experience includes serving as lead counsel in numerous national and local class actions in the areas of employment discrimination, Fair Credit Reporting Act violations, First Amendment and other constitutional claims, housing discrimination, school desegregation, voting rights, consumer fraud, and securities fraud, among others.
Matt is a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, and has received numerous awards from bar and public interest organizations for his advocacy efforts. He is AV rated (“preeminent”) from Martindale-Hubbell, has been both an Illinois Super Lawyer and an Illinois Leading Lawyer for many years, is rated “superb” by AVVO, and has been selected by Law Dragon as one of the 400 best litigators in the nation.
Matt also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Immigration Council, and is an active member of the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund, a nonprofit, public interest organization dedicated to combating fraud against the government and protecting public resources. He has spoken about issues relating to the representation of whistleblowers, including a presentation entitled “The False Claims Act: Combatting Fraud on the Government.”
